Arzu Çelik, Associate Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Boğaziçi University, met with SEV American College students on December 9, 2016. She provided information to SAC’s 10th grade students about genetic research. It was unique for SAC students to witness DNA extraction from the Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly).  More specifically, Arzu Çelik extracted polytene chromosomes (giant chromosomes) from the salivary glands of Drosophila melanogaster. She dyed the chromosomes with aseto orcein, then showed the chromosomes under a microscope to our students.

Our students had the chance to ask questions about both giant chromosomes and recent genetic research by scientists.

The presentation was done in English.

Our sister school, Tarsus American, had the opportunity to watch the event live on YouTube.
