II. Child Protection Symposium in Education Brought Educators with the Theme of “Social Media and Child
After hosting the 1st Child Protection in Education Symposium in Turkey in the 2018-2019 academic year, SEV American College Child Protection Team hosted the 2nd Child Protection in Education Symposium this year under the theme of ‘’Social Media and Children’’ which brought together educators from different regions of Turkey and leading experts in the field.
The symposium, held on Saturday, February 29 welcomed a broad participation of educational educators, school leaders and psychological counselors from all around Turkey who had the opportunity to learn in detail about the effects of social media on children.
Opening speeches were given by the SEV American College Principal Figen Karakuş, the SEV American College Head of School Michael Wilkinson, and the SEV (Health and Education Foundation) General Manager Binnur Karademir. In the first session of the symposium, the Psychoanalyst Serge Tisseron from University Paris VII gave a presentation on the psychological effects of social media.
In the second session, the theme of the symposium ‘’Social Media and Children’’ was handled in a discussion under the moderation of the Expert Psychological Counselor Levent Kurt. The theme was discusssed by three field experts with different perspectives. Lawyer Murat Aydın approached the issue from a legal point of view; Dr. Esra Ercan Bilgiç, in terms of communication, and the health trainer Efsun Sertoğlu with the dimension of protective-preventive educational implementations.
In the last session, experiences by the Child Protection Teams of SEV schools were shared from the aspects of school management and psychological counseling.
In the session moderated by Expert Psychological Counselor, Fatma Munar from Üsküdar American High School, Üsküdar SEV Elementary Schools Director Saliha Aslan approached the issue from the point of view of the school management while Psychologist Selcan Yavuz and Psychological Counselor Esin Aydın from American Collegiate shared their views from the aspect of psychological counseling.
